The difference between turbocharging and supercharging

The structure of the turbocharging system, the working principle is ignored. This system directly uses the exhaust gas energy, not only does not consume additional power, but also pumps the piston positively under most working conditions; after boosting, it maintains the engine's low working condition performance While basically not reducing, the power output, fuel economy and emissions of medium and high working conditions can be greatly improved; coupled with the continuous reduction of the volume, weight and cost of the turbocharger, and the continuous increase in reliability, this The supercharging method is more and more widely used in vehicle engines.

The compressor of this kind of system is directly driven by the engine crankshaft through the transmission device, because the dynamic response of the mechanical transmission is faster than that of the exhaust, and there is no interference to the exhaust system, which is its advantage. Moreover, unlike turbocharging with turbo lag (turbocharging does not start at low speeds), the effect of mechanical supercharging is less affected by the speed, and similar supercharging effects can be obtained under various speed conditions. Therefore, mechanical supercharging is particularly suitable for improving the power output of the engine in low-speed conditions, so it is widely used in racing engines and passenger car engines that pursue low-speed acceleration capabilities.

In Europe, most low-end cars are diesel engines. For diesel engines, because of their small speed range and high exhaust pressure, turbocharging is inherently more suitable for diesel engines than mechanical supercharging. Therefore, in my opinion, it is for this reason. In order to cope with the increasingly stringent emission regulations, European manufacturers have chosen to reduce the displacement and adopt the route of turbocharging, which has caused the situation that turbocharging is more popular today.
